Prince George TMJ

TMJ

Do you have pain in your jaw? Do you hear a clicking or popping noise when you eat, yawn, or talk? Have you noticed changes in your bite (the way your teeth fit together)? If so, you may have a TMJ disorder.

TMJ stands for temperomandibular joint, the joints that connect the jaw to the sides of the skull. The ball-and-socket jaw joint is prone to developing issues due to bruxism, injury, illness, arthritis, or bite issues. TMJ disorder causes pain and discomfort, and can even lead to the ball slipping out of the socket, causing further issues with a misaligned bite including increased pain and difficulty using the jaw.

Any changes in your bite, pain in the jaw, unexplained headaches/earaches or noises in the jaw should be reported at your next dental checkup. We will ask you questions and physically examine the jaw joint for its range of motion, spots of tenderness or pain, and noises. X-rays may also be ordered.

The treatment for TMJ disorder ranges from at-home care (such as hot or cold packs) to splints or mouth guards, to jaw adjustments or (in severe cases) surgery. We will advise you what’s best for your particular situation.
